South Carolina Football: Everything You Need to Know for National Signing Day

South Carolina's recruiting class is shaping up and could get a whole lot stronger as national signing day approaches.

With top targets like Dexter Wideman, Poona Ford and Derrell Scott still out there, the Gamecocks will try to land a few more solid recruits to add to an already well-rounded recruiting class.

Here's a guide to national recruiting day for the South Carolina Gamecocks that includes the top remaining targets, the current commits, potential impact players, storylines to watch for and a couple of fun facts.

Top Remaining Targets

1 of 5

Dexter Wideman, DT; 6'4" 255 pounds; (Saluda, S.C.)

Poona Ford, DT; 6'0" 285 pounds; (Hilton Head, S.C.)

Derrell Scott, RB; 5'11", 180 pounds; (Havelock, N.C.)

    D.J. Smith, 4-star CB; 6'0", 191 pounds; (Marietta, Ga.)

South Carolina is trying to land some of these players and would be doing backflips if it lands any of them. All of these guys are high-caliber recruits who fit the mold of South Carolina's style rather well.

Wideman and Ford would slide into an already well-built defensive line that will become a force of the future alongside Dante Sawyer and eventually Shameik Blackshear.

Scott is the all-purpose back that South Carolina will need in the post-Mike Davis era. Scott can do it all and do it all at a very high level. Steve Spurrier would love to have a guy like Scott in his offense.

South Carolina is thin at defensive back, especially cornerback considering Vic Hampton, Jimmy Legree and Ahmad Christian are all gone. D.J. Smith is a must-have recruit.

Current Commits

Tyshun Samuel, WR; 5'11", 180 pounds; (Inman, S.C.)

Kevin Crosby, TE; 6'0", 236 pounds; (Bamberg, S.C.)

Players Who Could Contribute as Freshmen

3 of 5

Dante Sawyer, Abu Lamin and any other defensive line recruits could have an immediate impact on the defensive front due to the departures of Jadeveon Clowney, Chaz Sutton and Kelcy Quarles. With a need for defensive linemen and the hopes of adding to the incoming class of commits, the defensive line is one of the brightest areas for a freshman to step up. Or in the case of Lamin, a JUCO player finally getting his chance at D-I football.

Shaq Davidson also has a good chance of making an early impact now that Bruce Ellington has left for the NFL. Ellington occupied the slot but could also move around. Davidson's versatility as a receiver could prove to be very valuable. After all, with two players named Shaq to throw the ball to, the Gamecocks have no choice but to unleash the Shaq Attack.

Storylines to Watch

4 of 5

Dexter Wideman is currently committed to Florida State. And why should he switch his commitment status considering the Seminoles are coming off of a national championship and the program is quickly moving up the ranks?

The South Carolina native was expected to join the Gamecocks, so his July commitment to the Seminoles shocked many. Now, it looks like the defensive tackle is going to remain in-state and head to Columbia to play for Spurrier and Lorenzo Ward.

With each day that passes, it looks more and likely that Scott will don the garnet and black. But curveballs in the recruiting races do occur. There's some competition for the highly touted running back, though it looks like South Carolina has this one locked up. Watch for Scott's announcement because this kid can play and will fit perfectly into the South Carolina offensive game plan.
