Three-time national champion Jeremy Abbott is the story of the evening at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships. The three-time national champion earned a stunning 99.86 to win the men’s short program after a nearly flawless performance at the TD Garden in Boston.
While Abbott was the evening’s unquestioned star, the biggest surprise came from Richard Dornbush, who finished second with a score of 92.04 after a thrilling performance of his own. Right behind him is another party-crasher in Jason Brown, who had the skate of his life as well, posting an 87.47 to position himself nicely for an unexpected trip to the 2014 Winter Olympics.
The free skate portion of the national championships will take place Sunday, and while not guaranteed, it’s likely that the gold and silver medalists will earn the two available spots on the U.S. Olympic men’s figure skating team at the end of the competition.
Live coverage of the free skate finale will begin at 3 p.m. ET on NBC.
