A goal from Jese on the hour-mark added to Karim Benzema’s first-half tally as Real Madrid picked up a 2-0 win over Osasuna in the first leg of this Copa del Rey Round of 16 tie at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.
Madrid, however, will have no doubt expected to come away from this match with more of an advantage, but neither Cristiano Ronaldo nor Gareth Bale made much of an impression for the Primera Division giants.
Osasuna, meanwhile, battled valiantly and put in a good defensive performance, although their limitations going forward were laid bare for all to see over the 90 minutes.
|Player||First half||Second half|
Casillas: Had only a single save to make during the first half.
Arbeloa: Needs to be far more accurate in his distribution from the right.
Pepe: Was caught out for Osasuna’s only corner of the period.
Ramos: Typically dominant in the air.
Marcelo: Yet to really combine with Ronaldo down the left.
Modric: Played in the searching free kick that produced the opener.
Illarramendi: A few too many misplaced passes.
Bale: Had only 30 touches and was rarely involved.
Jese: Was booked for diving when, in reality, he was tackled fairly by Riesgo.
Ronaldo: Only started to come on late in the first half.
Benzema: Took his header well in opening the scoring.
Casillas: Another clean sheet for Madrid’s Copa del Rey and Champions League specialist.
Arbeloa: Had a much better second half and might have scored but for Flano’s excellent block.
Pepe: Completed 98% of his passes.
Ramos: Defended well positionally and wasn’t penalized for a single foul.
Marcelo: Unusually quiet match for the Brazil left-back.
Modric: Touched the ball 110 times and nearly earned a second assist when he played Benzema clean through.
Illarramendi: Improved after the restart but still needs to grow in confidence on the ball.
Bale: Had just 69 touches and will have wanted to contribute more.
Jese: Found the back of the net before being substituted with a leg injury.
Ronaldo: Assisted on Jese’s goal but didn’t do much else.
Benzema: Has 99 career goals for Real Madrid.
Isco: Looked unsettled after replacing Jese.
Morata: Didn’t have much time to make an impact, but tracked back impressively.
Casemiro: Played only the final minute plus stoppages.
