The San Francisco 49ers cover the spread all the time on the road and as a favorite, while the Carolina Panthers cover the spread all the time at home and as an underdog.

These trends clash violently Sunday in an NFC Divisional Round battle, but one head-to-head trend cannot be denied: Carolina is 15-3 against the spread lifetime against the 49ers, who have covered just twice in nine career visits here.

Carolina stayed UNDER in eight of its last nine regular-season games, while the 49ers had gone OVER in three straight before last week's Wild Card game in Green Bay stayed low.

Why the 49ers can cover the spread

If San Francisco can travel into frigid conditions like it did last week at Green Bay and score an opening-round win, there's no reason to believe the defending NFC champions can't do the same this week on Tobacco Road.

They have dominated on the road lately with an 11-3-1 ATS streak in 15 road games over two seasons, and they are 9-1 ATS as a road favorite. This is also a revenge game from a regular season home loss.

Why the Panthers can cover the spread

Carolina looked good on November 10, traveling to San Francisco and shutting down the 49ers in a 10-9 win.

Since losing three of its first four games, the Panthers have won 11 of their last 12 games and come into the postseason one of the hottest teams in the league.

They are 7-3 ATS lifetime in the playoffs, 8-1-1 ATS in their past 10 home games and 8-3 ATS the past 11 times they got points from the oddsmaker.

Smart Pick

The Panthers did it once, why not again? They've not only knocked off the 49ers once this season, but have also defeated the Patriots and Saints in this stadium.

Since a season-opening home loss to Seattle, the Panthers are on winning run of 7-0 SU and 6-0-1 ATS at home and they won’t take kindly to the disrespect of being labelled an underdog while also division champion.

The Odds Shark prediction computer has spit out a 26-26 tie here and it won't be a surprise if this game comes down to the final play or goes into overtime.
