Redemption was the word of the day at the 1,000-meter U.S. long-track speedskating trials on Sunday at the Utah Olympic Oval.

After being disqualified at the 500-meter distance on Saturday for not wearing the proper timing transponders around his ankles, Jonathan Garcia was able to put the mishap behind him and grab the fourth qualifying spot at his best distance, securing his first-ever trip to the Olympics.

Two-time gold medalist Shani Davis, Brian Hansen and Joey Mantia make up the other three members of the men's  1,000-meter squad.

On the women's side, favourites Heather Richardson and Brittany Bowe led the pack, while Sugar Todd and Kelly Gunther posted personal-record times to grab the last two qualifying positions.

With veteran Davis in top form and strong first-timers, especially on the women's side, Team USA is well-positioned for an impressive showing in Sochi at the 1,000-meter distance.
