The Washington Redskins have covered five of their last six against the New York Giants, but Washington has also lost all five of its divisional games this season.

New York is on a 9-2 straight-up run when installed as home chalk.

Giants-Redskins point spread: Giants opened as 3.5-point favorites; the total was 45.5. (Line updates and matchup report)

Odds Shark computer prediction: 15.8-14.1 Giants

Why the Redskins can cover the spread

Washington shut down Robert Griffin III two weeks ago, and in the Redskins' first two games under the guidance of quarterback Kirk Cousins they're still 0-2. But they've looked competitive and have played better on offense, losing both games by one point.

The Giants will have probably five days of preparation for Cousins, and very little film study of him as a starter, which may be a benefit to the Redskins. The revenge factor applies here, after New York won 24-17 in D.C. on Dec. 1.

Why the Giants can cover the spread

Eli Manning and the Giants come in after improving to 6-9 with a stunning win over Detroit. They'll be pumped for this home finale, as they've done a good job in showing plenty of pride after opening the season by losing their first six games.

Part of their 6-3 run was that win in the nation's capital earlier this month, over these same Redskins. Though Manning has been interception-happy this season, he showed poise last week, even without Victor Cruz in the lineup. A win doesn't get them anywhere, but it could apply some salve to the season.

Smart Pick

New York coach Tom Coughlin is going to have his team ready on defense, as the Giants' stop unit will be firing on all cylinders. On the other side of the ball, the Redskins are going to come after Manning with everything, and at this point it's almost automatic that he will be forcing throws that could be picked.

This turns into a defensive battle, and looks like an UNDER. Ten of the last 13 meetings have stayed low, while nine of the last 10 times they've played in Jersey have stayed UNDER.

  • Redskins are 5-1 ATS past six games vs Giants
  • UNDER is 10-3 past 13 meetings of Giants and Skins
  • Nine of past 10 meetings here played UNDER
  • Giants are 9-2 SU past 11 games as home favorites
  • Redskins lost all five divisional games in 2013
  • Giants 7-2 ATS past 9 regular season finales
  • Redskins OVER is 11-2 past 13 Week 17 games
