This one in from the department of "I didn't see that coming."
Greg Biggins of Scout.com (subscription required) is reporting that Junipero Serra quarterback Jalen Greene has given his verbal commitment to the Trojans after first flipping from Boise State and then Washington.
Greene is a 6'2", 185-pound gunslinger who was described as "one of the top dual threat quarterbacks in the region," according to the aforementioned report.
Biggins also goes on to say:
He has a live arm and the ball just explodes out of his hand. He throws a very tight ball and there’s little wasted motion in his release. His best attribute right now is probably his athleticism and ability to escape pressure in the pocket.
In other words, this is a quarterback that new head coach Steve Sarkisian figures will thrive in his hurry-up system.
Rated a 3-star prospect by Scout.com, Greene held offers from Colorado and Fresno State in addition to Boise State and Washington.
In reviewing Biggins' scouting report, it is easy to understand why Sarkisian feels Greene is the right guy for his system.
Greene is a phenomenal athlete who runs like a receiver and is very strong. It usually takes 2-3 guys to bring him down on every scramble and he has the ability to feel pressure coming, escape it and then make a big throw down the field. He’s a great leader, a very competitive player and a winner.
Still, Greene is very raw and will take some time to develop which makes this a very interesting prospect considering the limited scholarships USC has available.
However, there is one other aspect to this commitment that bears noting, and it has nothing to do with the quarterback himself.
According to Scott Altenberg, Greene's head coach at Serra, the quarterback was actually in Las Vegas to watch USC's victory over Fresno State, and he made the trip with none other than Adoree' Jackson, the 5-star cornerback, via Scout.com, who has USC high on his list.
According to the Biggins article, Altenberg is quoted as saying:
He (Greene) went up with Adoree (Jackson) to watch USC play in the Vegas Bowl. Jalen is very excited about this, USC is his dream school, that’s where he has always wanted to go so he’s pretty happy about it right now.
Is this a two-for-one deal to draw Jackson to the Trojans, or is Greene the real deal and a guy USC fans should be excited about for his own merit?
Probably a lot of both but time will tell.
