Joe Girardi in Trouble in the Bronx?

Rob BrownApr 21, 2008

As any baseball fan knows, Hank Steinbrenner has definitely lived up to his father’s reputation already.

And as others know, Joe Girardi's firing in Florida had a lot to do with disagreements with the management, stating that he was the manager of the team and should be able to run it how he wanted.

So now that Hank Steinbrenner has made it clear that he's unhappy with the current pitching rotation, could Girardi already be in trouble?

The "untradable" young pitchers, Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy, are both off to forgettable starts this season. Hughes is 0-3 with an 8.82 ERA and Kennedy is 0-2 with a 9.64 ERA while Joba Chamberlain remains in the bullpen.

Steinbrenner feels that Joba should be moved to the starting rotation as soon as possible, while Girardi feels otherwise.

On the most recent episode of the YES Network's "Joe Girardi Show," Girardi said he wasn't sure if Chamberlain would ever be put in the starting rotation this season.

Because of his young age and limited innings last season, all three you of the "untradable" youth pitchers, Hughes, Kennedy, and Chamberlain, are on unannounced inning limitations.

Coming in the defense of Girardi during all of this is GM Brian Cashman, who also feels that Joba shouldn’t be moved from the bullpen just yet. Cashman said he isn't quite sure what set Hank off about the situation as it’s one that he's familiar with.

Noting the very public conflict, it’s important to realize how much Hank is like his father, Principal Owner George Steinbrenner.

And to remember his history with on-again-off-again manager Billy Martin, and the incident when Yogi Berra was fired early on in the season after starting off poorly, leading to his refusal to have anything to do with the Yankees for more than a decade.

Not to say that Girardi could be fired that easily, but would anyone be surprised?

And if this can set off Hank with Don Mattingly sitting at home after initially being the favorite for the job, anything is possible.

But for now, it looks like this problem may just blow over, as long as starting pitchers Mike Mussina, Ian Kennedy, and Phil Hughes step it up a notch.
