Atletico Madrid established a three-point gap atop the table—for the day at least—with a thrilling 3-2 victory at home to 10-man Levante on Saturday.
Diego Costa scored twice for the hosts, who overcame Levante's first-minute opener as well as a second-half equalizer. Levante had Juanfran sent off in the 90th minute.
The win gave Atletico 46 points, three more than Barcelona, who play at Getafe on Sunday.
Andreas Ivanschitz put Levante ahead in the first minute, but Diego Godin leveled on the half-hour mark. Costa volleyed in to give Atleti a 2-1 lead in the 47th minute, but Pedro Rios equalized for Levante nine minutes later.
Costa then settled the match with a 77th-minute penalty to send Atletico to the top of the table.
