Game 1 Recap: Suns Come Close but No Cigar

Jeremy KaufmanSenior Analyst IApril 21, 2008

In the first highly anticipated match between the Phoenix Suns and the San Antonio Spurs, it took an overtime basket for the defending champs to put away the relentless Suns. While Steve Nash and Amare Stoudemire both put forth huge performances in the series’ first game, Shaquille O’Neal’s presence went largely unnoticed, as foul trouble kept him off of the floor for a large portion of the match. In the end, Shaq finished with 11 points and 5 rebounds in 30 minutes of play. At the same time, Tim Duncan, the man whom Shaq was acquired to shut down on the defensive side of the game, scored a blistering 40 points, including a 3- point shot that helped send the game into overtime. Therefore, Suns fans may be feeling very uneasy right about now, as thus far the Shaq trade is looking to be a bust. However, the Suns still managed to put forth a great game in spite of Shaq’s lackluster performance, giving Suns’ fans hope that they may be able to take down one of the NBA’s most dominant franchises.
