Come to Think of It... Lighten Up on Cubs Fans Already!
In light of the hypersensitivity of the general public these days, I beg for your pardon.
As a Cubs fan, I know you see us throwing baseballs on the field, you see racially offensive tee-shirts, etc, and you get all 'Cub fans are morons' on us.
Well, hey, we're not all a bunch of drunken, know-nothing, foul mouthed idiots. Some of us are, that's true. but not all of us.
First of all, there are plenty of Cubs fans that can only get out to Wrigley Field occasionally, as in once or twice a season due to cost and other factors.
Second, the majority of fans are well behaved, it's always the few bad apples that spoil the whole bunch.
And third, lighten up already! This P.C. world we live in won't even tolerate a little bit of humor. We censor whatever we can, we have to watch what we say, we have to go out of our way to be sensitive to every ethnic, racial, gender, moral and religious whim - heck, we even have to be careful in how we treat war criminals. Let's be careful not to torture them, we wouldn't want to hurt people who may have tried to kill millions of innocent Americans.
See how serious this stuff gets? And all we want to do is to watch a ball game, drink a beer, eat a hot dog and cheer our favorite team on to victory.
And if we don't win, excuse us if the hundred years of frustration occasionally rears its ugly head in the form of booing and throwing things onto the field. After all, we're only human.
And, as humans, we make mistakes, How come there's no tolerance for that in a world in which we must tolerate everything else for fear of insulting someone?
I know the shirts were classless, but c'mon, let's not make it out to be something that it's not. It was obviously a take off on Harry Caray's "Holy Cow" and an homage to one of our new favorite players, Fukudome. And if in the process we got carried away and insulted the Japanese, we're sorry and let's move on.
For we're Americans who don't always say the right thing, do the politically correct thing, or exercise the best judgement.
But we usually don't do it with any malice intended. Some do - those are the racists, bigots, evil, even dangerous few in society that have no business being here. Yet we tolerate them too, somehow, someway.
No, most of us are just living life, trying to take care of our families and enjoying a cold beer. Come to think of it, hope that doesn't offend anyone.
