It’s a typical matchup of non-playoff teams which is interesting only to Browns or Jets fans (and bettors).
Point spread: Jets opened as one-point favorites; the total was 40.5. (Line updates and matchup report)
Odds Shark computer prediction: 16.0-12.9 Browns
Why the Browns can cover the spread
What looked like a promising start to the campaign (a 3-2 mark over the first five games) has turned into another disaster for Cleveland, which has lost eight of its last nine games. The skid has plunged the Browns into the AFC North cellar, so if there is one thing they can do for themselves, it's close the season out by playing with some pride in one of their last two games. Makes sense to think they can do it against an equally disappointing team.
Why the Jets can cover the spread
As bad as things seem for New York, it has won and covered three of its last four home games—including victories over two teams that could very well meet in the Super Bowl, New England and New Orleans.
Overall this season, the Jets are 5-2 SU and ATS at MetLife Stadium, home to the 2014 Super Bowl. This being the home finale, the Jets will be fired up to win and that's all they need to do with a point spread like this.
The Browns have squandered late leads in their last three losses and have now lost at least 10 games their last six seasons. They had a chance to win last week's home finale against the Chicago Bears, but blew that.
There is nothing to salvage with this downtrodden team, and as mentioned, with this being the home finale for the Jets, New York is the obvious choice in a near pick'em contest.
- Road team has won four of five career meetings of these teams
- Browns are 2-19 SU past 21 road games
- Jets are 5-2 ATS past seven home games
