Shawne Merriman, the All-Pro linebacker of the San Diego Chargers, saw action in one game in 2008 before shutting it down the rest of the season because of torn knee ligaments.
Now that Merriman has had a full season to recover, there are still some questions about his availability for the 2009 season. His return to the field is critical to the Chargers' fortunes. He is the one player who can create pressure without having to blitz.
The man they call Lights Out is the unquestioned leader of the defense. Here are 12 questions I would ask Lights Out Merriman heading into training camp:
1. First of all, how's the knee?
2. Are you confident that you can return to being a Lights Out player?
3. This being a contract year, do you feel there is added pressure on you to perform at a high level? At an All-Pro level?
4. What are you expectations for yourself and this team?
5. Is your preference to stay in San Diego and be a Charger?
6. Would you consider playing elsewhere?
7. Do you believe this team has what it takes to win a Super Bowl?
8. What was the hardest part about sitting out last year, watching your teammates win against the Colts and lose to the Steelers?
9. Were you offended the Chargers drafted Larry English, an outside linebacker who some view as a possible replacement for you?
10. Did A.J. Smith or Norv Turner let you know the team was taking a linebacker?
11. Do you believe that you have finally gotten rid of the steroid stigma and be able to play without hearing any whispers about you being clean?
12. Do you use the injury, the contract, Larry English and the steroid issue to fuel your appetite for another Pro Bowl season?
