Auburn native and 5-star linebacker prospect Rashaan Evans has committed to Alabama, according to ESPN.
Evans is rated as the nation's No. 1 outside linebacker and 15th overall prospect in the class of 2014, according to 247Sports' composite rankings. Evans had also received offers from Auburn, UCLA, Arizona, Clemson, Florida State and Georgia, among others.
The 6'3", 220-pound defender boasts tremendous athleticism and speed off the edge (he runs a 4.51 40-yard dash) as well as stellar lateral movement skills. Recently, Evans blossomed into a defensive force at Auburn High School, developing into a dynamic pass-rusher over the past couple of years and catching the eye of the country's top college football programs.
He's recorded 25 sacks and 19 tackles for a loss since his junior year in 2012, per MaxPreps.
How do you think Evans will perform at college?
The key for Evans at the next level will be bulking up by adding more muscle and size to his frame. He'll also have to polish his technique in order to maximize on his athleticism. Assuming he can settle into a position somewhere in the defensive front seven next year, that task will become much simpler.
After all, Evans' versatility is part of what makes him so special.
ESPN Insider's scouting report (subscription required) describes Evans as a "hybrid defender who could fill multiple roles." However, Evans appears best suited in a pass-rushing role, where his motor and quickness are sure to turn in results.
He'll have to improve his technique against the run like most edge-rushers making the transition from high school to college, but the physical tools are there. With the right amount of hard work and coaching, Evans projects to become an adaptable star in the coming years.
