Strong Winds Blow Punt Out of the End Zone for a Safety

Bleacher Report

A very strange thing happened Saturday during the 2013 Fisher Automotive El Toro Bowl between Arizona Western and the New Mexico Military Institute.

During the fourth quarter, Arizona Western punter Joel Maddock was punting out of his own end zone and facing a stiff wind.

What happened next was unbelievable. Maddock punted the ball but got all laces, so it went straight up in the air, landed on the 7-yard line then bounced about 17 yards right out of the end zone for a safety, giving NMMI a commanding 16-point lead. Maddock probably couldn't do that again if he tried.

NMMI went on to win the El Toro Bowl 32-16, but the game will be long remembered for this punt.

Thanks to Barry Petchesky of Deadspin for the find, and AWCTV for the video.
