The San Francisco 49ers have covered seven of their last eight when installed as road favorites, while the UNDER has cashed in 12 of the last 16 meetings in this series.

Tampa Bay, meanwhile, has been profitable lately, covering five of six overall.

Point spread: 49ers opened as 3.5-point favorites; the total was 41.5. (Line updates and matchup report)

Why the 49ers can cover the spread

San Francisco's monumental win over the Seahawks last week made it three straight, following a brief two-game slide that saw the Niners fall at home versus Carolina and in New Orleans.

The hard part of the schedule is out of the way, with the Bucs, Atlanta and Arizona left on the calendar. That last game might decide a wild-card berth, so the Niners can't afford any letdowns.

As road favorites, the Niners have been money-making machines at 7-1 ATS.

Why the Buccaneers can cover the spread

Anytime a team on the East Coast can get a West Coast team in town, the home squad has a chance to win a football game. It doesn't matter that Tampa Bay has just four wins, what matters is those victories have come in the Buccaneers' last five games.

The Niners may also be poised for a letdown after they knocked off Seattle last week in a crucial NFC West clash. And the Bucs are 5-1 ATS the past six weeks.

Smart Pick

As mentioned, the Niners are still in the middle of a playoff race, and the NFC Wild Cards are still in question. Though they're at the top of the wild-card standings, both the Niners and Carolina are holding off Arizona, Dallas and Chicago.

It's go time for the defending NFC champs, who aren't about to let down against the Buccaneers.
