We could make a lighthearted quip at Danica Patrick's expense, but somehow we believe it will go unappreciated.
Such was the plight of Jay Mohr, the actor/comedian/sports talk radio host who was tasked with the privilege (losing battle?) of hosting the Sprint Cup Awards Banquet last Friday.
CBS Sports' Evan Hilbert spotted the posted video and reminded us that some athletes just can't take a joke. We encourage you to make it through the three minutes of video, a task that might feel more like three years.
It all starts with Mohr spotting Patrick in the crowd, something that doesn't seem to please the driver. That's when the host of the aptly titled Jay Mohr Sports, tosses out a joke in her direction.
"Danica, I hope you're not too uncomfortable tonight," Mohr offered before delivering the punchline. "I know you're not used to being this close to the front."
The crowd then gives some "Ohhs" and "Ahhs" as if Mohr had just destroyed her with some kind of Jeffrey Ross Friars' Club Roast joke.
Really, this is the kind of joke that should garner polite giggles not shock and certainly not trigger a disgusted face. But that's what we get from Patrick and her boyfriend Ricky Stenhouse Jr. who, to be fair, seems to lighten up when a barb was sent his way.
Even Kevin Harvick was all smiles when Mohr joked with him.
Of course, we see that Patrick still hasn't let the joke go when she accepts her accolade, leading to Mohr subsequently reminding the entire NASCAR contingent that these are all jokes.
He actually admires Patrick and was just giving her the kind of hard time relegated to good friends. Perhaps NASCAR should get a clown or mime to host next year, because nobody laughs at them.
