Washington Redskins vs. Atlanta Falcons: Spread Analysis and Pick Prediction
Patrick Smith/Getty Images

The Atlanta Falcons have beaten the Washington Redskins four of the last five times the teams have met. Atlanta is favored to add to woeful Washington's misery when the teams meet Sunday at the Georgia Dome.

Point spread: Falcons opened as 3-point favorites; the total was 51. (Line updates and matchup report)

Odds Shark computer prediction: 18.0-14.6 Falcons

Why the Redskins can cover the spread

Maybe getting embarrassed at home by the Chiefs last week will wake this team up. After going 10-6 last year Washington is 3-10 this year. And now the 'Skins might sit Robert Griffin III. Might that be a rallying cry for the troops?

Washington can still run the ball with running back Alfred Morris. And if they choose to sit Griffin, fellow youngster Kirk Cousins didn't look all that bad in limited action last year. Also, it might be better for the Redskins to go on the road right now, rather than play another game at an empty FedEx Field.

Why the Falcons can cover the spread

After the disastrous start that basically eliminated them from playoff contention, Atlanta has been been playing better ball as of late. They gave New Orleans a very tough game three weeks ago, out-gunned Buffalo for a victory two weeks ago, and last week built a 21-6 lead at Green Bay before allowing the Packers to rally for a victory.

Quarterback Matt Ryan has hooked up with WR Roddy White 18 times for over 200 yards the last two weeks, and RB Steven Jackson has rushed for 220 yards over the last three games. They historically cover the spread against the Redskins (4-1 ATS).

Smart Pick

The Odds Shark computer is predicting an Atlanta victory and cover in a game that plays UNDER its total. The Falcons may be going through one of those seasons in which just too much goes against them, but they also know they're a decent teamoutside of the injuriesand that Coach Smith will be back next year.

Washington, on the other hand, may have given up on Coach Shanahan. Go with Atlanta.

Trends:

  • Redskins 1-4 SU and ATS past five vs Falcons
  • OVER is 4-0-1 past five Washington trips to Atlanta
  • Falcons played five straight OVERs as home favorite
