First half
David De Gea: Nearly conceded in the 12th minute, when Teixeira came within inches of putting Shakhtar ahead with a quick attack.
Rafael: Bombing forward on the right to dangerous effect. Chipped in defensively with four tackles and two interceptions.
Rio Ferdinand: Out-paced easily by Douglas Costa in the box midway through the half, but Costa's cross came to nothing. Made three clearances.
Jonny Evans: Made four clearances and blocked two shots.
Alexander Buttner: His deliver on two early crosses was poor. Douglas Costa is proving a handful down Shakhtar's right flank. Buttner is, however, completing 95 percent of his passes, the best rate in the side.
Ashley Young: Took a poor corner early in the half. Should have scored late in the half from Giggs' fine pass. Missed badly again just before half-time when set up by Rooney. Clearly lacking confidence.
Ryan Giggs: Played a nice pass over the top for Young late in the half, a pass that should have set up a goal.
Phil Jones: Charged into the box trying to set up an early chance. Completed 90 percent of his passes in the first half.
Adnan Januzaj: The youngster is making his Champions League debut tonight. His giveaway in the 12th minute almost led to a Shakhtar goal. Later did well to chest down a cross, turn and shoot in the box, though the attempt was straight at the keeper.
Shinji Kagawa: Playing in his preferred role as central playmaker
Wayne Rooney: Serving as captain for the night, Rooney started as center-forward but often dropped into midfield to find the ball. He set up Young for a chance late in the half, and moments early was open for a tap-in, had Young squared the ball to him.

Second half
David De Gea: Kept another clean sheet, his fourth straight in the Champions League.
Rafael: Solid on the right, both offensively and defensively. Made five tackles and three interceptions.
Rio Ferdinand: Better in the second half after a shaky opening period.
Jonny Evans: Made seven clearances, most in the side.
Alexander Buttner: An opportunity missed for the left-back
Ashley Young: Better in the second half before being subbed out in the 63rd minute. His first half was poor, though.
Ryan Giggs: Made way for Tom Cleverley in the 63rd minute, and United immediately looked more incisive.
Phil Jones: Got a crucial touch on Rakitskiy's shot early in the half, redirecting the ball onto the post to keep the score level. Took his chance well on the other end, scoring a goal that will go a long way toward righting the ship for United.
Adnan Januzaj: Showed flashes of his considerable skill and worked hard to win the ball back. A fine introduction to the Champions League.
Shinji Kagawa: All over the pitch for United.
Wayne Rooney: Came close with a chip from distance after noticing Pyatov off his line early in the half.
Substitutes
Robin van Persie: Replaced Young in the 63rd minute. His superior delivery from the corner led to Jones' goal, which was no coincidence.
Tom Cleverley: Replaced Giggs in the 63rd minute. Immediately added cohesion to United's midfield.
Antonio Valencia: Replaced Buttner late in the match and had little time to affect the outcome.
