New Zealand had Ross Taylor to thank for reaching a position of 307 for six on Day 1 of the Second Test against the West Indies in Wellington.

Taylor scored 129 before he was caught by Shane Shillingford off the bowling of Shannon Gabriel—it was his first dismissal of the series after scoring an unbeaten 217 and 16 not out in last week's opener in Dunedin.

Taylor found support from the returning Kane Williamson (45), as well as thirties from Brendon McCullum and Corey Anderson.

But the West Indies will look back on the day as one of missed opportunities, with sloppy fielding and dropped catches typifying their day's work.

In fact Taylor was dropped at slip by Kirk Edwards from just his fifth ball, and had he been held, the scoreline could have looked very different.

It was the tourists' choice to field first, anticipating a bowler-friendly wicket. They struck early too, Darren Sammy and Tino Best prising out both openers with just 24 runs scored. But once the effects of the new ball had worn off the batsmen found stroke play fairly easy, and Sammy's bowlers failed to give him the control needed to build pressure.

New Zealand's tail is capable of wagging—if they can push the score past 400 on the second day of the match they will have a strong position from which to bowl.

That said, the West Indies showed their capacity for resilience in saving the first match in Dunedin, and much will depend on what mood the batting line-up turns up in for the innings.
