"Brazil, Spain and Germany are the favourites. Maybe it isn’t a great time to play against them, but we aren’t thinking about that too much just yet. Hopefully we won’t draw one of those stronger teams early on though."
Notice how he didn't mention an Argentinian side featuring a certain Lionel Messi?
But, as Zinedine Zidane points out, there will be few teams who fancy facing Portugal if Ronaldo's rich vein of form carries through to next summer's finals.
And with the draw now decided, Germany—who he didn't fancy—USA and Ghana will be hoping not to meet the Portuguese international in his recent hat-trick mode.
"What he does on the pitch is breathtaking, absolutely marvellous," Zidane told Marca, going on to reference Ronaldo's exploits against Sweden in the recent make-or-break qualifier Portugal faced.
He's never quite managed to find those performance levels against Portugal's pending World Cup opponents though.
Portugal and Germany have met at three of the last four international tournaments, and it doesn't make for particularly nice reading for Ronaldo or for fans of Portuguese football.
Admittedly, Ronaldo's first meeting with the Germans didn't carry the greatest weight—it was the third place playoff at the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
The hosts won 3-1 on that occasion thanks to a Bastian Schweinsteiger double.
Two years later, the two sides were face-to-face again at Euro 2008. They met in the quarterfinals with the DFB-Elf again victorious: This time they won 3-2 and Ronaldo again failed to score.
Next up, the sides were drawn in the same group at Euro 2012. The result? A German win.
Mario Gomez got the only goal on that occasion, leaving Ronaldo goalless against Germany in three competitive meetings.
Cristiano has never come across Ghana in a Portugal shirt but, like his record against the Germans, his goal scoring against African teams at World Cups is not good.
In 2010, he was part of a Seleccao side that fired blanks against Ivory Coast in a 0-0 draw in the group stages.
Four years previous, he had played in a 1-0 win against Angola in the World Cup, again failing to register against African opposition.
Elsewhere he's not managed to make the net bulge against Cameroon or South Africa in friendlies.
As with Ghana, Cristiano Ronaldo has never met USA in a friendly, let alone at a competitive level.
In his two previous World Cups, Portugal have drawn teams from the other side of the world as opposed to one of the North or Central American sides.
He scored once in each of Portugal's wins against Iran and North Korea, though, if that carries any weight.
