4-Star RB Darrel Williams Decommits from Arizona State

Arizona State lost a commitment from one of the key members of its 2014 recruiting class Thursday.

According to Rivals.com reporter Jason Howell, running back Darrel Williams backed out of his verbal pledge with ASU, ending a pact with the 4-star prospect that dated back to August.

Williams, a 6-foot, 217-pound product of John Ehret High School (Marrero, La.), has seen his recruitment reach another level in recent months. Newfound interest includes late offers from LSU, Wisconsin, Tennessee and Florida.

The combination of an expanded recruitment process and program proximity appears to be the main cause of Williams' change of heart.

Williams received a visit from Tennessee coaches Wednesday, according to 247Sports. The Volunteers now emerge as a top candidate to land the Louisiana prospect, while LSU is also firmly in the mix.

His other offers include Auburn, Georgia, Nebraska and Vanderbilt.

He leaves Arizona State's 2014 recruiting class with 19 players. The Sun Devils built recruiting momentum late in the season, including December commitments from 3-star running back Demario Richard (Palmdale, Calif.) and 3-star defensive end Jonathon Johnson (Woodland Hills, Calif.).

Richard is the lone remaining running back in the current crop of Arizona State pledges.

Williams rushed for 1,733 yards and 20 touchdowns through the first 10 games of his senior season, according to NOLA.com. He is an explosive back with enough size to take on the bulk of carries in an offensive backfield.

Arizona State considered him one of the team's top commits for nearly four months. However, it seems  Williams' desire to play closer to home and the allure of SEC competition is simply too much for the Sun Devils to overcome.
