It seems lately when I watch the Cubs I seem to think differently than what our great manager does. In the game the other night against the Cardinals when we were in our losing streak and unable to score runs, we had a chance to intentionally walk a batter to make a force at second for a double play and get out of an inning. Albert Pujols had doubled and then was bunted to third and Chris Duncan was against Ryan Dempster, instead of good ol' sweet Lou doing something out of the ordinary (which he is supposedly known for doing) and walking the hitter to have a double play set up, he let him hit and he singled to right scoring Pujols. Oh yeah and the next hitter Nick Stavinova grounded into the inning ending double play, we lost that game 2-1.
then last night as I am watching a very hard fought game in which Randy Wells pitched great and the offense was getting guys on but no one in, I saw what I seem to think was another chance for a win go bye bye. It is the bottom of the ninth Milton Bradley on third, D-Lee on second, and Geo on first with one out and Bobby Scales coming to the plate. He is a switch hitter and he did hit the home run to give the Cubs their only run, but this is his first time in the majors and you have a good power hitter and RBI guy in Micah Hoffpauir on the bench. I know he doesn't play second base but you know who said they would, but our great manager has listened (Soriano). That did not matter because there was only one out and even after Scales struck out there was another chance to get Hoffpauir in the game with Jake Fox coming up, but wait he was playing third and Micah does not play third. Scales plays third and Soriano said he would play second to get Hoffpauir in the game. It would sure be nice for our manager who doesn't go by the book to stop going by the book.
