It's been an exciting time for transfer rumours in the Scottish game recently.

In what is a remarkably young league (with an average age of just under 25), good starts to the season by the likes of Celtic, Inverness and Dundee United have fueled speculation that some of the league's more prominent players will soon depart.

We've narrowed down the most consistent reports to name four of the hottest transfer rumours circulating the Scottish game.

As always, if you think someone else should have made the list, why not leave a comment to tell us why?

4. Stevie May Linked to Peterborough, Rotherham

1 of 4

St. Johnstone striker Stevie May has yet to experience a bad spell this season.

The 21-year-old has eight goals and six assists in 14 league appearances so far, which means he's been directly involved in more than half the Saints' goals.

The Scotland Under-21 international cut his teeth with two loan spells at lower league clubs Alloa and Hamilton before stepping up to the Perth side's senior squad this season.

Sky Sports reports English League One play-off hopefuls Peterborough have been sniffing about in the last couple of months, while The Star suggests Rotherham have done the same.

The Saints' apparent £800,000 valuation has been the stumbling block, Millers boss Steve Evans told BBC Radio Sheffield, according to The Scotsman.

However, if May can keep up his impressive form, a move to a higher level than that may not be out of the question.

3. Gary Mackay-Steven Linked to Celtic, Leeds and Blackburn

2 of 4

It seems only a matter of time before Gary Mackay-Steven departs Dundee United for pastures new.

At just 23, he is arguably the key player in Jackie McNamara's impressive young side.

So far, the Terrors have the best defence in the league with just 10 goals conceded and are second only to unbeaten league leaders Celtic in terms of goals scored with 25.

The former Liverpool youth player has impressed greatly over the past three seasons with his dribbling ability. He has garnered interest in recent months from Celtic, according to the Daily Mail, while Sky Sports suggest Leeds United and Blackburn Rovers are also interested.

2. Fraser Forster Linked to Barcelona, Benfica and Manchester United

3 of 4

Fraser Forster is approaching his 100th clean sheet for the Bhoys in only his fourth season with the club.

Even before he was finally capped by England in the friendly against Chile last month, the 25-year-old's list of rumoured suitors was impressive.

Following two impressive seasons in the Champions League and outstanding domestic form, the Daily Record has linked him with Barcelona, Sky Sports has linked him with Benfica and the Metro has linked him with Manchester United

1. Ryan Gauld Linked to Real Madrid, Manchester United

4 of 4

It is rare to hear anyone call Ryan Gauld by his real name anymore—he's usually referred to simply as "Scottish football's hottest property."

However, even that might be doing him a slight disservice, as the level of interest in the 17-year-old Dundee United player has expanded recently.

According to The MirrorReal Madrid and Manchester United are rumoured to have sent scouts to monitor his progress, with the Red Devils seemingly ready to take their interest to a more substantial level with a £3 million bid.

Christened the "Baby Messi," Gauld has had an explosive start to the season, garnering four goals and five assists from 13 appearances.
