At last, the agony Denver fans have been feeling all year should finally be put to rest by the Lakers in the next few weeks, and so should George Karl's tenure as head coach of the Denver Nuggets.
Not only has Karl lost his passion for the game, but his team has as well. This team is getting older, and going nowhere fast.
If the Nuggets' organization wants a title, it needs to blow up this team, starting with Karl. Replacing him with a defensive-minded coach such as Jeff Van Gundy or Rick Carlisle would be a great start.
They may slow down the offense some, but will increase ball movement and decrease turnovers. Some fresh blood needs to be brought in to change the attitude of the team as well, and the Nuggets need to get rid of their older players while they can still get value for them.
Allen Iverson is free to go after this year, and he should move to a team that gives him a better chance to win a title.
This along with trading Kenyon Martin to an Eastern Conference team (the Nets for Nenad Krstic and Marcus Williams?) should free up some cap space to go after Josh Smith of the Hawks.
Taking a less expensive route by going after Jarvis Hayes may be better however, leaving Denver some room to sign a player like Emeka Okafor to solidify the space left by Kenyon Martin and Eduardo Najera.
Bringing in a guy like Craig Smith would help scoring and rebounding off the bench, and re-signing J.R. Smith should also be a priority. The question with Smith is whether he will be a guy that tanks it after he receives a nice contract.
By doing these things, Denver not only becomes a much younger team, but they also stay competitive in the unbelievably difficult Western Conference.
