MMA, Matt Serra, UFC, Rich Franklin, Michael Bisping, Georges St. Pierre, Anderson, Travis Lutter, ufc 83

In what can only be classified as the strangest UFC in recent memory, if not ever, Canadian fight fans were treated to the bizarre spectacle that was UFC 83. Of course, they were there to see if the hometown boy Georges St. Pierre could defeat welterweight champ Matt Serra to regain his belt. However, they would first have to bare witness to the strangest moments in UFC PPV history.

To mark the occasion, all broadcast fights will have the results, a breakdown of the fight and a WTF (What The F***) Moment to emphasis exactly how strange this fight card was.

First, the fights that weren't broadcast:

Jonathan Goulet defeated Kuniyoshi Hironaka  via TKO at 2:07 of the second round.

Cain Velasquez defeated Brad Morris via TKO at 2:10 of the second round.

Rich Clementi defeated Sam Stout via split decision.

Demian Maia defeated Ed Herman via triangle choke at 2:27 of the second round.

Jason Day defeated Alan Belcher via TKO at 3:58 of the first round.

Jason MacDonald defeated Joe Doerksen via TKO at 0:56 of the second round.

Now, onto the broadcasted fights, or as I like to call them, the What The F*** fights.

Fight #1: Mac Danzig defeated Mark Bocek via choke at 3:48 of the third round.

Breakdown: This fight started off slow for Danzig, who arguably lost the first round. He seemed to find his confidence later in the fight, finally scoring the submission victory that many predicted.

WTF Moment: Mac Danzig took until the third round to sink the choke. This is the weakest WTF moment, but still relevant. As shown on TUF last season, Mac Danzig has more than ample experience and ability to take out most of his opponents. However, his inexperience in the UFC seemed to cause him to start slowly before showing the UFC fans what seems to be the first of many wins from the up and coming star.

Fight #2: Michael Bisping wins defeats Charles McCarthy via referee stoppage at 5:00 in the first round.

Breakdown: New to the middleweight class, Bisping looked light on his feet and much improved with his stand up game from his previous fights. For the majority of the round he controlled McCarthy with a variety of jabs and crosses, backing McCarthy into the cage before striking with knees. With approximately 20 seconds remaining in the round Bisping unleashed a flurry of knees and punches more accustomed to Chuck Liddell or Anderson Silva, dropping at ever protected (he never dropped his arms) McCarthy who was unable to get up after the round had ended, giving Bisping the win.

WTF Moment: The first time that Bisping backed McCarthy into the cage and began his knee strikes, McCarthy forced Bisping away, dropped his hands and laughed at him. Not a smirk or a shake of the head, a full laugh, mocking Bisping as though his guard were impenetrable. We would find out with 20 seconds to go in the round, that it wasn't.

Fight #3: Nate Quarry defeats Kalib Starnes via unanimous decision.

Breakdown: It was all Nate Quarry this fight. Starnes presented almost no offense and retreated the entire fight. Quarry landed jab after jab and an incredible number or leg kicks, but Starnes continued to retreat and offered no offense in return. This resulted in the most lop-sided decision in UFC history: 30-26, 30-27, 30-24. This means that two judges took away extra points for lack of effort. It would be surprising to ever see Starnes in the UFC again after this performance.

WTF Moment: Late in the third round Quarry finally had enough of Starnes retreating and chose to mock Starnes by pretending to run after him in a pseudo-running man attempt. Starnes retaliated by giving Quarry the finger. He also kept retreating. Quarry did the same thing again. Finally, he covered his face with one and a swung blindly with the other, mocking Starnes... who continued to back away. The fight ended with both corners having heated words.  There might be some fines after this one.

Fight #4: Rich Franklin defeats Travis Lutter via TKO at 3:01 of the second round.

Breakdown: It was obvious from the start that Lutter wanted nothing to do with Franklin's standup and shot for an early take down. He then transitioned to Franklin's back, but was unable to sink his hooks in and look for the rear naked choke. Franklin remained calm and pulled half guard. Lutter was then able to work his way back to a potential arm bar, but Franklin again escaped before the first round ended. Lutter had nothing left. The second round was little more than Lutter getting jab after jab in the face and weak attempts at ankle locks. Finally, the ref showed some sympathy for the spectacle and ended the fight.

WTF Moment: Rick Franklin escapes an arm bar from a BJJ black belt. This wasn't a weak attempt and Franklin didn't muscle out of it. This was an example of Lutter not executing. It look as though, even though he had Franklin in perfect position, he didn't keep his knees together and Franklin executed a perfect escape by rolling under his own shoulder. Where exactly did Lutter get his black belt from?

Main Event: Georges St.Pierre defeats Matt Serra via TKO at 4:45 of the second round and regains the Welterweight Championship!

Breakdown: St.Pierre showed the world why he is such a dangerous fighter. From the start St. Pierre showed a great deal of respect for Serra's striking by shooting for and getting a take down. Most of the first round consisted of Serra switching from half to full guard as St.Pierre continued to attempt passes and land strikes from the top. The second round was more of the same, however, Serra soon found himself in turtle position and eating the most vicious knees to the ribs in recent memory. The shots were so strong and unanswered that the fight was stopped.

WTF Moment: The fight was stopped because of knees to the side. I'm not saying it wasn't the right thing to do. I'm just saying that they were the most powerful and vicious knee strikes I can remember. Most fighters land one or two in the position. St. Pierre rained them down as though he were trying to cave in Serra's rib cage.

  1. McCarthy was stopped by a forearm injury.

Bocek is a BJJ black belt, it probably should have taken a few rounds to choke him.

    1. Thanks for the McCarthy update, it was a bit hard to hear where I watched the fights. And I agree with the fact that it shouldn't be an automatic win for Danzig, but he still didn't look the same as we saw from him on TUF.

  2. Franklin performed a perfectly executed escape to the attempted armbar and it worked for that reason and the fact the Lutter had Franklin's arm extended out at an angle and not straight out from his body.

    1. the angle really doesn't make a difference if the knees are kept together, sometimes, an exaggerated angle is more difficult to escape from.

  3. St. Pierre is the man. I love that dude. Even though I hate Canada. Its like a counterfit America.

    1. I need only two words to explain how awesome Canada really is: Celine Dion.

  4. Starnes should:
    1. never be allowed to fight for the UFC again
    2. not be paid because he did not show up for the fight
    3. apologize to everyone who watched the fight.
    4. apologize to everyone in the martial arts community

and yeah, after this try striking fear in unruly bar patrons as a bouncer. Gina Carano could have beaten this kid with one arm tied to one leg.

    1. perhaps some Pride-esque rules will be instated about fighters not pushing the action get less money.

    2. I new a Gina Carano from Mcalester Oklahoma are you talking about the same one?

  5. I think TUF6 was mostly a showcase for Danzig and George...Bocek was a little stiffer test IMO.

    1. Rumor has it that his nickname in certain circles is "Ginger Rickson".

  6. I'm impressed with GSP and would love to see hime at 185, however ANDERSON SILVA i believe would take him out silva style! knees and elbows and a few upper-cuts for good measure. Any 1 else agree with me

Fighting out of wang chan Eire

    1. The following fighters should stay put: Silva, GSP and Penn. I just don't see the need to switch weight classes. The point eludes me.

  7. Good article! I am so glad you mentioned Charles mugging during the first round of his fight with Bisping. If not for the Starnes fiasco I think he would have been mentioned for comic relief attempt of the night, but alas, he was outclassed. What an unusual tactic for Captain Miserable to use against the Count.

    1. I am far from being a Bisping fan, but after I saw "chainsaw" do that I, along with everyone else in the bar, wanted to see a KO.

  8. It appeared to me in the Lutter arm bar that, during the transition, his right leg got hooked under his left and over the shoulder of Franklin, instead of the chest, thus allowing the rolling escape. A mis-step, yes, but not quite the complete lack of execution you portray. JMHO

    1. I was going over it with some guys at rolling today and it was almost like he was trying to figure four the arm, but I just can't imagine why. Maybe it was an early sign of how gassed he was.
