The NHL Hall of Fame recently released the list of players eligible for Hall of Fame induction for 2008. It can be found at
www.legendsofhockey.net/html/ind08prolog.htm
From this list, I feel that I should condense it to a list of seven players who I think deserve to be in the Hall of Fame the most out of the men on this long list.
There are many players that deserve to be in the Hall of Fame, yet many will have to wait, as better players are continuously retiring, and the Hall needs space for them.
The stats are formatted as such: Goals-Assists-Points
Glenn Anderson: 498-601-1099
Anderson was part of the Edmonton dynasty of the 80s and won six Stanley Cups over his career. You don't win that many just by being on the right team at the right time. This guy was great and deserves a HoF ring.
Phil Housley: 338-894-1232
Housley was the highest scoring American for a while, until Joe Mullen and Mike Modano came along. Unfortunately, he never won a Stanley Cup, yet he is good enough to be a candidate for the Hall this year.
Doug Gilmour: 450-964-1414
Gilmour was one of the most underrated players in NHL history. He won a Stanley Cup and a Canada Cup early on in his career. This guy is for real.
Boris Mikhailov (stats are for Senior World Championship play): 98-71-169
Mikhailov won eight World Championships in Russia and two Olympic Gold medals. He was also the captain of the famous 1980 team that lost to the Americans and won a Silver in Lake Placid. Mikhailov was probably the best player ever not to play in the NHL. He would have been the modern day equivalent of Alex Ovechkin had he moved to the USA to play. He deserves a nod for the Hall of Fame.
Goalie stats are structured as followed: Wins-Shutouts
Tom Barrasso: 369-38
He won two Stanley Cups with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1991 and 1992. He was easily the best goaltender of his time, and for that reason in itself, he should have his picture in this famous Toronto building.
Andy Moog: 372-28
Moog won three Stanley Cups over his career, and was also one of the most underrated goalies ever. He may not deserve a spot in the Hall of Fame, but he sure deserves a look.
Mike Vernon: 385-27
Vernon won two Stanley Cups with the Red Wings. He was an unbelievable goalie, especially in the clutch when his team needed him the most. He should at least get a look from the voting committee this year.
So there you have it. These are my seven players who I feel should get looked at. I do not necessarily believe that all seven should be inducted. Perhaps two or three of them.
Who will my picks be? Well, that will come later, once the inductees are announced by the league. But no matter who is picked, they sure won't beat last year's inductees for the Hall of Fame.
