Iker Casillas Transfer News and Rumors Tracker: Week of November 25
Updated: Wednesday, November 27, 2013
It has been a tough year for Real Madrid star Iker Casillas. The captain is still fighting for his place in the starting lineup, while top clubs around the world seem to have one eye on his situation.
The January transfer window is now quickly approaching, and the future of Casillas is on everyone's lips. It seems impossible for the Spanish international to wear any other shirt, but we must remember that he is also fighting for his place in Spain's World Cup squad.
This article will serve to keep track of the latest rumors and news reports regarding Iker Casillas. Be sure to check back regularly as we will be updating the tracker daily.
"I Strive to Be a Starter at Real Madrid, Not a Back-Up"
Before the winter transfer window can even open, Iker Casillas has sent a message to any clubs interested in him. He is happy at Real Madrid.
According to Chris Myson of Goal.com, Casillas had the following to say about his current situation at Real Madrid.
As of today I am happy and I want to carry on, but I strive to be a starter at Real Madrid - not a back-up. If I do not play I will eventually tell you that I am not happy but I am fighting for my place in the side. I will not give up.
I do not think about the World Cup. Qualification and our time with the national side is over for now, so we need to focus on the club. If I do things right, Del Bosque will see that and I will be in his consideration. I am only thinking about doing everything right and doing everything possible to play.
It seems as though Casillas is not even entertaining the idea of leaving Real Madrid. He is focused on winning back the starting role and will not give up until he does.
Manchester City Target Casillas as Joe Hart's Replacement
With Manchester City keeper Joe Hart struggling for form lately, the English club is now looking at Iker Casillas as the perfect replacement.
According to Tom Hopkinson of the Mirror, Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has drawn up a shortlist of keepers to replace Joe Hart—Iker Casillas, Victor Valdes and Julio Cesar.
It is believed that Hart will continue to see time on the bench until he is either replaced or finds his form again. If City opt for Valdes, they will have to wait until the summer, while Casillas and Cesar could possibly be available in January.
If Casillas is serious about fighting for his place, Pellegrini would have to convince him to leave Spain.
As of now, the move looks unlikely.
Florentino Perez Looking to Sell?
According to a report on Monday morning by AS.com, Real Madrid President Florentino Perez met with Manchester City owner Sheikh Mansour in Abu Dhabi.
If you believe the report, Perez was in Abu Dhabi on a business related trip. However, many have taken the time to start the rumor that the real reason the two met was to discuss the possible transfer of Iker Casillas.
At this time the purpose of the trip and meeting is unknown. One thing is for sure though, Perez has some explaining to do when he gets back to Madrid.
Fernando Hierro Weighs in
With all of the rumors swirling about over the future of Iker Casillas, Real Madrid legend Fernando Hierro took the time to give his opinion on the topic.
In an interview reported by Marca.com, Hierro admitted that he believes Casillas won't be leaving Real Madrid anytime soon and that the keeper is still playing great football.
"I think he is doing great; when he comes onto the pitch he is just his usual self and that's important for his confidence and self-esteem. He was superb in Turin against Juventus. These are very personal decisions, but I have a feeling that Iker Casillas will be with Real Madrid for a long time yet."
With many thinking that Casillas is nearing his end at the Santiago Bernabeu, it doesn't seem like Hierro believes one word of the rumors.
Casillas to Leave at the End of the Season?
According to Spanish reporter Guillem Balague, if things don't change soon then Iker Casillas is ready to leave Real Madrid at the end of the current season.
Balague recently gave an interview on the subject with Revista de La Liga which was reported by SkySports.com. In the interview, he had the following to say.
"Manchester City definitely want Iker Casillas for next season. He's known about it for a while, but they are not the only team that are after Iker Casillas. It will be up to him what he does next, obviously. But if he continues to not play, and he won't unless Diego Lopez gets injured, then he wants to leave Real Madrid at the end of the season.
He's had enough and he's imagining the possibility of playing abroad. Although he loves the Premier League, maybe it doesn't suit his game as much as the Italian league or the German league. But he's going to have offers and if he continues like this, he will leave Real Madrid."
If this really is the case then it appears as though Casillas could be gone this summer unless he manages to win back the starting role.
