Dwyane Wade has dealt with plenty of stuff the past few years, and little of it warranted a laugh track.
A nasty public divorce.
Still, when it came to adapting his experiences to the small screen, Wade chose a sitcom.
"I wanted to bring some light into the dark, the dark times," Wade said.
Tuesday, before Wade sat out the game against the Atlanta Hawks to rest his knees, the news surfaced that Wade has sold his story to FOX to develop a regular 30-minute series. The show, if produced, will feature a single father with two sons—patterned on his relationship with 11-year-old Zaire and six-year-old Zion. It is a companion project of sorts to his book, A Father First.
Wade initially debuted the book in an essay for CNN back in July entitled: 'Single parents prepare kids for game of life.'
The working title is Three the Hard Way, which is a play off his jersey number, his number of NBA championships and the number of males in his immediate family.
"I loved it," Wade said.
Wade is represented by Creative Arts Agency—which has plenty of experience in the entertainment world—and is dating actress Gabrielle Union. He's spent plenty of time recently in Hollywood, so he's not flying entirely blind. He says that he will let his creative "team" handle many of the details, but he will try to provide input where possible.
"It's a comedy, there are some things you want to let loose, and let the smart people be smart," Wade said. "But you also want to make sure certain elements stay in."
So, the key question:
Who plays him, especially now that Omar Epps is up in years?
"I haven't figured that out yet," Wade said. "But I'm sure it will be somebody very handsome."
One option could be in his locker room.
After all, Ray Allen did star in the hit film He Got Game.
"I don't know if he's gonna have the time," Wade said. "But he still could. I'm going to have to talk to him about that. Pro bono."
When told of that offer, Allen—who is still getting checks from his Jesus Shuttlesworth performance all these years later—smiled and shook his head.
