Billy Gillispie, former head coach for the University of Kentucky men's basketball program, is suing the school for around $6 million, according to wire reports.
Gillispie and his attorney claim he is owed for four-of-five years left on his contract with Kentucky. The case was met with surprise by the school, which stated that Gillispie was working under a memorandum rather than a signed contract, as he had never worked out the final details.
Gillispie's attorney states that the coach was mislead by Kentucky, which brought him to leave a "rapidly ascending program" at Texas A&M. The attorney also seeks punitive damages along with court costs.
It will be difficult for Gillispie to form a strong case, as no signed contract exists. Upon his arrival at the school, he repeatedly refused to sign a contract, which some say ultimately led to his dismissal. A memorandum, by definition, is an informal written communication, which leaves no real legal ground for the former hoops coach to collect damages or money provided by a contract.
Gillispie filed suit in Dallas and is currently out of coaching.
