Mourinho returned to Chelsea in the summer and almost immediately made Oscar the focal point of his midfield.
Oscar has revealed in an interview with Globoesporte, via Sky Sports, Mourinho took him under his wing early in his return to the club.
“Upon his arrival at Chelsea, Mourinho spoke to me," Oscar said. "He gives me confidence and I'm trying to return all such support on the pitch.”
Oscar has flourished in the role, and has four Premier League goals to his name this season.
The 22-year-old’s performances in the early weeks of the season won Mourinho over. Speaking in the Daily Mail in September, Mourinho said:
Oscar is my No. 10, and if somebody tells me that Oscar is not Chelsea’s best player since the beginning of the season, I would have to disagree.
I want Oscar as my No. 10 and I want the other two players from the sides to adapt to that and learn how to do things they were not ready to do before.
Mourinho has been a fan of Oscar for quite some time, as the Brazil international has revealed his now boss considered taking him to Real from Internacional in the summer of 2012.
Per Sky Sports, Oscar said:
A month before signing for Chelsea I was very close to doing so with Real Madrid as Mourinho said he wanted me.
They came to watch me in the game against Denmark.
Before the games there were talks with Madrid, but they had the playmaker position well covered. After the games, I signed for Chelsea.
At the time of his transfer in 2012, Real had Mesut Ozil—who has since made the move to Arsenal—in the playmaker role.
