It was never really in much doubt.

Mexico demolished New Zealand 5-1 on Wednesday to leave them almost certain to be in Brazil next summer.

After dominating play for the opening 30 minutes of the first leg of their World Cup qualification play-off with New Zealand, El Tri finally took the lead through Paul Aguilar.

The midfielder turned home after the All Whites goalkeeper failed to clear a cross properly.

The opening goal, as is so often the case, seemed to open the floodgates. Shortly before half-time, Raul Jimenez made it 2-0 from a set piece.

Then, just three minutes into the second half, Oribe Peralta made it 3-0.

Two further goals followed, before Christian James (just about) grabbed a late consolation.

Prior to the game, the official Twitter account of the venue hosting the second leg of the tie—the Westpac Stadium in Wellington—tried to indulge in some mind games with Mexico's Azteca Stadium.

Alas, it does not seem to have helped the hosts.
