NFL, Hawaii Warriors Football, Colt Brennan, Preview/Prediction, NFL Draft Challenge

The NFL draft is a crazy process, and players move up and down draft boards like a child on a pogo stick.  However, never has one player drawn rave reviews by some and been chastised so much by others such as this player.

He's a household name to many, but very unpopular with the fans who don't want their team to waste a pick on this loser.  He has been mentioned as high as the second round, or maybe he could go undrafted.

He is the most scutinized player in the draft that nobody wants, yet everyone has him some mock draft - going to practically every team.  It's crazy!  Welcome to the life that is Colt Brennan.

The last time the world saw the University of Hawaii star QB Colt Brennan, he was getting pummelled by the Georgia Bulldogs in the Sugar Bowl on New Year's Day.  Since then, he has been through one hell of a roller coaster ride.

First came the Senior Bowl, where he weighed in at 185 pounds and showed less than adequate footwork running plays from center under the watchful eyes of San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Mike Martz.

Word was that he was constantly berated and town down by the coaching staff.  NFL Network video of a few Brennan workouts showed Brennan having trouble with the deeper throws which severely hurt his value in the draft.

However, there are rumors that the coaches think he would be a good fit for the 49ers. As it turns out, that during those sessions during the Senior Bowl, Brennan tore his labrum, which caused some soreness in his hips. This led to a dead leg and some difficulty throwing the deep ball.

At the end after the week of practice in AL, Brennan was chosen as team captain ahead of the other star QBs Ainge and Woodson. However, during the game, Brennan had an unspectacular day leading many to question the lack of competition that he faced during his career.

Next came the NFL combine, where the first news to come out was that Brennan was reported as being a "jackass" by a Chicago writer who spoke to a scout from an NFL team.  During the week at the combine, Brennan weighed in at 208 pounds.

He then endured a battery of questions regarding his past "arrest" in Colorado, the stigma of being a system QB, and the health related issues during his senior season which included a severe ankle sprain, and a concussion or two.

Finally, during the workouts, Brennan was the only quarterback to have a 100-percent throwing session receiving a perfect grade on the passing drills (two drops by the WRs were credited as completions because he had hit them right in the numbers).

Unfortunately for Brennan, there were less than 25 media members who watched his throwing session, so little was reported in the media about his successful day.

The third stop was his University of Hawaii pro day in California where he didn't throw as accurately because many of his recievers were gimpy and came up lame in their routes.  During the pro day, it was reported that Brennan needed surgery to repair the partial tear in his hip and wouldn't run the 40-yard dash, further dropping his stock value.

Then to top of the afternoon, Brennan weighed in at 218 pounds, and questions circulated regarding the how the 30 + pound weight gained was achieved and where it was a healthy weight gain.

Now we are only one week away from the NFL Draft, and Brennan is probably the biggest name question mark in the entire draft.  He may go as high as the second round, but may also drop completely down to the sixth round as well - or maybe even undrafted according to some pundits.

After doing a little research, I found something absolutely amazing.  Different mock drafts have every team picking Brennan somewhere in the third to sixth rounds.

it seems 20 of the 32 teams in the NFL has their team selecting Brennan in some round of mock draft, but nobody seems to say that they want to take him. Fans don't want him, scouts say they don't think he will pan out, yet all these teams are being speculated as teams of interest who have them in a draft mock up.

Some of these teams include the Patriots, Eagles, Redskins, Jaguars, Bears, Packers, 49ers, Seahawks, Saints, Panthers, and a host of others.  So don't be surprised to hear on Sunday morning that your team just picked Colt Brennan.  Unbelievable!

If Colt goes in the fourth round or later, he will be a steal. He will be one of the two or three QB out of this draft that will make it in the NFL even though he is rated behind the John Booty's, Josh Johnson's and Denis Dixon's of the world. So with that, here is where I think Brennan would fit perfectly and where he will end up.

Although there are absolutely no reports that they are interested in him, I think Colt Brennan will become a Tampa Bay Buccaneer, and it would be the best fit.  Jon Gruden loves his QBs, and he will use his third round pick to draft the Hawaii QB.

Break down Brennan and he will remind you of another Gruden coached QB, Rich Gannon.  The word on Gannon when the Raiders signed him to a large free-agent  contract was that he was mobile, competitive, a fiery leader, and very accurate; but didn't have a strong arm and threw passes at three-quarters to sidearm to some of his underneath receivers.  That's just about what the scouting report has on Brennan as well.

The Bucs current starting QB is Jeff Garcia, who will be 39 soon, and will only have another year or two in the league.  Garcia is also mobile, undersized, and someone who has to "load up" to throw the deep ball.  Just like Brennan.

Brennan will be the perfect fit for the Bucs and Gruden's offense, with the perfect time (one or two years) to groom him.  Don't be surprised to hear Brennan's name called when the Bucs pick in the third round...just remember where you heard it first!

  1. Brennan is over rated! He sucked against GEorgia and has not chance to succeed in the NFL. He'll probably end up in the CFL w/ TImmy Chang

    1. Of course one is going to suck when he has absolutely no pass-protection. Thats probably the only game you saw of Brennan, and to judge him off that is absurd.

    2. Seriously...there wasn't a single guy on the Georgia defense who won't end up getting drafted, and they just overwhelmed UH's offensive line. Even the haters admit that he's easily the most accurate quarterback in this draft and he might be the most accurate in any draft in the past five years. Ask most scouts, they'll say that's the most important thing for a QB entering the league. Before you say Flacco is God's gift to quarterbacking, I'll remind you that Timmy Chang could also throw the deep ball very well, but his lack of accuracy killed his pro prospects. Just sayin'...

    3. Colt Is as accurate as can be no matter how good he plays people questions him because he didn't come from a big time school it's as simple as that. People forgot about the 06 sugar bowl where brady quinn didn't have a strong outing but still all you heard was how great he was. Mostly all the people who say that he's overrated saw what only the sugar bowl well woppie only that one game you judge him. As far as him not playing any top rated team They beat boise state and Fresno state this year and the other year they beat purdue and arizona state which was never mention during arizona states run as undefeated. If you see it as him as overrated well you think exactly like every other person who only saw the sugar bowl. Colt got a perfect throwing during the pro day and yet you here nothing of that all you here is how matt ryan is the best or darren mcfadden is the best well to me they are indeed the best but to here peoples biased opinion towards colt for playin for hawaii is b.s. Lets face it Colt did great things and he gets no congrats he gets well it's the system but when Tim tebow who is a great player who plays for FLORIDA( another big confrence team) scores 50 touchdowns in 1 season all the way to the heisman thats all you here on sports center on the radio man. But a year earlier colt Throws for 59 and runs in 4 touchdowns bringing his total to 63 touchdown no one says anything about it all you here is Well he Plays in a four wide spread offense Well my question for them is no matter how good tebow is most of his running touchdowns came from the red zone. Seriously though Colt is a tough guy and for 1 game to bring him down like that is obserd because many do have off games but when Colt gets a pounding from a team That probably should have played for the national Championship and still get all the taunts of how he is a system quarterback is a unfair biased opinion period.

  2. I think you are too high on Brennan. The man ran the spread offense in college in a conference that was short on talent. The problem with Brennan is that he is small, and there has been a history of guys coming out of spread offenses and being complete busts, like Andre Ware and more recently Alex Smith. Scouts are scared of him for good reasons, but that cool aid everyone was drinking during the college season last year started to taste not so bad when you compared him with the other guys in this draft class.

Oh yeah, he is also going to be 25 coming into the NFL season, thats about 3 years older than a lot of the other guys coming out. The last successful player college QB that came out that old was Chris Weinke, and I think Weinke was as good or better in college compared to Brennan, and Weinke was a 4th rounder.

    1. IMO I think coming from the spread is a plus for a QB in this day and age of the NFL. Teams are using more and more formations of the spread in their offenses nowa days, Pats, Colts and now the 49ers. The problem with QB's coming from such a system as the spread or run-n-shoot is that they have trouble with taking snaps under center in the NFL. But put Colt in WCO or Coryell type system with a year or two of grooming and I think he would be one hell of a QB. Bill Walsh and Mike Martz have two things in common, they both think arm strength is overrated and both stress accuracy, accuracy and more accuracy....see Brennan's career completion percentage and Combine.

    2. His passing efficiency and completion percentage are off the charts, and he's a smarter quarterback than the Henne's and Flacco's of the world who just muscle up and gun the ball. Guys like that typically don't do well in the NFL. Neither do guys like Ryan who throw insane amounts of INT's. There really isn't a superstar quarterback to be had in this draft, but to me a guy like Colt who's smart accurate, and has a positive attitude is as safe a bet as you can find. And he's 6'3 218, that's not small. The only Kool Aid anybody's drinkin here is the Mel Kiper anti-Hawaii, anti-Non BCS conference kind. And where'd this idea that the WAC is weak come from? They've had teams in the BCS the last two years and Fresno is of that caliber but when you play a schedule like theirs its hard to run the table. The WAC is clearly the premier Non BCS conference

  3. the type of offense Brennan would run at Hawaii is the same as the run-spread used at WVU when it comes to preparation for the pros.

  4. This article is spot-on! I was just thinking the other day, Hmmm.....I've never ever heard of a draft prospect that could be drafted on the 1st day or maybe not drafted at all. That is absolutely insane!

I have little doubt though that someone will see the talent and inner drive to succeed to justify their 2nd or 3rd round selection of Colt Brennan.

Will it be Tampa Bay? Who knows, but based on need and style of offense, I'd bet money it will be either Tampa Bay, Green Bay, St Louis, or San Francisco.

Give this kid decent protection and this is what you get:

  5. Colt reached celebrity and is either loved or despised. He was beaten to a pulp by Georgia but still never once thought he could not bring the team back. He was only beaten when he was pulled from the game.

Lots of people think he will be a good backup or be ready in a couple of years, that's crap. Colt Brennan will be working from the moment of draft to be number one and start wherever he winds up. The bench will not satisfy him and he will challenge anyone who he is pitted against for the snap.

The fellow players and receivers of that team that recruits him will be the ones (chemistry) who put him on the field as the starter and the rest will be history.

    Bobby, awesome video..

  6. uhhh....the pats run a spread....idiots!

if you knew how the run and shoot works....you have to read defenses because the offense is made primarly for that.

all you rednecks need to first educate yourself before you make assumptions about an offense or any player.

also, you'd have to be an complete idiot to blame a QB for getting sacked all the time. when there is no protection....whose fault is that? when the raiders had all these bad years...did they say oh it was the QBs fault? no people said....DRAFT THE O-LINE GET A NEW COACH! so, you can blame june jones for not making the right adjustments.

lets see how your boy flaco or ryan does when teams stack 6 dbs because they know you will pass. they'd be trash

  7. Quick release, pinpoint accuracy, underrated arm strength - he can make all the NFL throws. He has a gunslinger mentality and did I mention the lightning quick release? This guy will put up some numbers and whats more, will have a chip on his shoulder.

  8. For those of you who have only seen Colt in the Sugar Bowl, here's a youtube video of his performance against ASU in the 2006 Hawaii Bowl....

This highlight is only of the 2nd half!!

Oh and for 2006, Colt had a monster year breaking many NCAA records...most notably for highest passing efficiency and TD in one season.
Oh and that 2006 year, Colt put up his numbers against:

Alabama, Purdue, Oregon State, Boise State, Fresno State, and Arizona State
(Oregon State beat USC that year and Boise State beat Oklahoma in the Fiesta)

  10. Hawaii Sports radio also has mentioned TB, SF, GB and Pats as suitable teams for Brennan. Comparisons to Rich Gannon and Jeff Garcia have been made by Pro Scouts. This article is spot on. Reason so much buzz around Brennan is his "uncertainty" factor. NFL talent. But average size and strength. Post season events resulted in drop in draft stock. From a business standpoint, I can understand and accept that. But no one can ignore Brennan's numbers despite the "system". I don't think anyone is suggesting he is a franchise savior off the snap. I honestly don't think any of the QBs in this draft will be very good in their first year. But I think Brennan will be a good investment for a team who can take advantage of his skills and will be around longer than people believe.

I don't think he'll be selected higher than 3rd round...more like 4th or 5th round. If he goes undrafted, he'll be signed as a free agent immediately. If that's the case...he will be the steal of this year's draft class because he will be able to pick a team that best suits his skills. Like it or not, Brennan will be in the NFL.

  11. Couldn't agree with you more Keith. But I believe his drop in stock through this off-season has been blown waaaaay out of proportion. For instance his poor showing at the Senior Bowl, what they don't say is, the QB's had only a week to learn the new offense given by their assigned NFL team. Thats almost zero time to build chemistry and/or timing with your receivers and RB's. What they also overlook is that other QB's besides Brennan had picks in that game, not to mention more snaps (Eric Ainge). What they tend to forget is that Brennan was voted Team Captain and the starter in that game. The media continued to knock his size and his arm-strength, Brennan wieghed in at 207 pounds and had a 100% accuracy grade at the Combine, now weighs 218 pounds from his Pro Day.

People think Brennan has completely dropped off the charts due to his recent surgery, thats silly. The kid will be up and running within 8 weeks, which is more than enough time to be ready for training camp. Now I agree that he may not be drafted till maybe the 3rd or later rounds but I'm willing to put my paycheck up (which isn't much) that IN NO WAY Colt Brennan goes undrafted!!!

  12. Colt Bennan could be be this year's draft sleeper we all talk about in coming years. Like Tom Brady, he won't be picked very high in the draft, but given a couple of years of being coached in the pro's and he will light up the score boards. He needs time to pass (pro offensive line), he can make the defensive reads (Hawaii's 'system' required the QB and receivers to read and adjust on the fly), he is accurate, he can move in the pocket, and he has already re-adjusted to being under center. He has proven he can win under pressure, and lead a team to come from behind. He simply needs to be surrounded by better talent to really show what he's got... the pro's will do that and more.
