Scouting Report, Video Highlights and Predictions for Miami's Chad Thomas

0 of 7

Chad Thomas is a 4-star defensive end who committed to Miami in July. The Hurricanes have never been a program to turn down a player who is athletic and can get to the quarterback.

Thomas is also from Miami, so he has a chance to quickly become a legend in his hometown. With his potential and talent, Thomas figures to be a key player for several seasons to come in Coral Gables.

His present and future both warrant a closer look.

Chad Thomas' Scouting Report: Strengths

2 of 7

At 6'5" and 240 pounds, Thomas has the ideal size and frame for the defensive end position. His best asset is his first-step quickness, as he possesses the ability to routinely jump on top of offensive linemen.

Thomas can shoot upfield at the snap to force blockers to bail on their technique within the first few steps of a play. He flashes the ability to convert speed to power during a rush, but Thomas appears to prefer to use his speed to run around offensive linemen.

He plays with solid leverage at the point of attack, where he uses his legs to anchor on the edges. Thomas can escape from the clutches of blockers with quickness, plus he has the athleticism and range to pursue the ball to different areas of the field.

With his size, quickness and solid strength, Thomas can kick inside to defensive tackle in certain sub-packages.

Chad Thomas' Scouting Report: Weaknesses

Thomas needs to add more upper-body power and strength. His legs appear to be strong, but he needs to get better at using his arms to press blockers off of him in the trenches.

The future Hurricane also needs to add more variety to his pass-rushing moves. This will come from his college coaches developing his hand usage and awareness to think several snaps ahead of offensive linemen.

Thomas is going to play as a true freshman for Miami in 2014. He has the talent to be a Freshman All-American, and he should make an All-ACC team as a sophomore.

He will be Miami's best pass-rusher early in his career, and he is going to lead the ACC in sacks and quarterback hurries before his career is over in Coral Gables.
