If FIFA 14 Ultimate Team teaches us one thing, it's that expensive players don't always perform.

Many gamers will have seen their oppositions's team flash up, curse with anger and then beat them anyway.

As with the real world of football, spending small amounts on quality players is nothing to be scoffed at.

Let’s zone in on Premier League defenders and pick up three behemoths who will set you back a tiny sum, with all statistics and average prices confirmed by FUThead.

Younes Kaboul, Tottenham Hotspur

A long-time favourite of FIFA players who don’t want to spend big, Kaboul is all about muscle, speed and aerial power.

The French defender isn't going to win any prizes for his ball control and simple abilities in possession, but he’s a physical monster. With 86-rated strength, 81 sprint speed, 84 standing tackle and 84 aggression, he preys on strikers who just can’t shake the centre-back off.

Need something a little extra? How about 92-rated shot power? Thought so.

Average Price: 2,000 coins (Xbox 360), 2,900 coins (PlayStation 3)

Mathieu Debuchy, Newcastle United

Alan Pardew’s Newcastle side are hitting a bit of form in the Premier League. Mathieu Debuchy is one of many players who are beginning to show exactly what they can do, and in FIFA 14 terms, the French right-back should be summed up as "Mr Dependable."

Just six of Debuchy’s 28 stats are rated below 70.

He is extremely well-rounded, will bomb up the wing when needed and has the dribbling skill to bypass the threat of opponents. The talented player is aggressive, has an 80-rated standing tackle and can even deliver pinpoint crosses, which also reach a total of 80.

He’ll cost you absolutely nothing, as well.

Average Price: 550 coins (Xbox 360), 650 coins (PlayStation 3)

Modibo Diakite, Sunderland

Modibo Diakite is 6’3”, possesses 93-rated strength, decent pace and jumping attributes which come in at 88. In other words, he’s an absolute monster.

The Sunderland defender also flaunts L/H work rates, meaning he is unlikely to surge up the pitch and will maintain his position in defence.

In a running theme throughout this article, he makes it a hat-trick of French players who would all link together to form perfect chemistry.

You can afford him after two Ultimate Team wins, confirming the notion that quality doesn't always need to cost thousands and flaunt outrageous speed.

Give Diakite a go, you won’t be disappointed.

Average Price: 750 coins (Xbox 360), 700 coins (PlayStation 3)
