One of the most anticipated video games of the year, NBA 2K14, is already on store shelves across the globe. But this November, 2K Sports will drop the next-generation version of its beloved basketball sim.
With both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 (PS4) set to release in the coming days, the wait is almost over for the first taste of next-gen sports gaming.
Below, we'll get you ready with key dates and what to expect when you fire up the next-gen version of NBA 2K14 for the first time.
PS4 Release Date: Friday, Nov. 15, 2013 (U.S.), Friday, Nov. 29, 2013 (Europe)
Xbox One Release Date: Friday, Nov. 22, 2013
As expected, the graphics in NBA 2K14 on the two next-gen systems are going to blow your mind. The players look more realistic than ever before, and the attention to detail paid to the players' bodies and faces make cutaway scenes that much more entertaining and lifelike.
From the sweat to the various facial expressions, it's difficult not to be blown away by the new look.
But the detail doesn't stop when you put the ball in play. The player movement and the overall appearance of the game make it feel like real life. Intense crowd reactions and real player voices help make next-gen NBA 2K14 pop off the screen.
Eco-Motion is the term to know when talking about NBA 2K14's gameplay. The new engine is similar to that seen in the current-generation version but features several noticeable enhancements.
Perhaps the biggest improvement is in player movement. In the current-gen version, players sometimes slide on the court. In the next-gen edition, there's an added emphasis on making each step count. Consequently, players plant their feet more often and the result is a more realistic look and feel.
The Eco-Motion engine also allows users to implement variety in their shots. No two shots appear to be the same, which makes for a more authentic product.
Users will notice many of the improvements within a few moments of playing the next-gen version for the first time.
The enhanced A.I. also adds a great deal to the user experience. While it may not be on the top of users' lists of complaints, computer-controlled players tend to operate with more purpose and urgency on both sides of the ball. Over the course of a game, those improvements are sure to stand out.
My Career, My GM and My Team
The My Career and My Team modes that NBA 2K gamers are familiar with from current-gen games of the past have returned in the next-gen version. They feature improved visuals as well as added detail to each mode.
My GM mode replaces the franchise mode in the next-gen version but will be every bit as enjoyable. The mode features added elements that should give users even more control over the direction of their team as well as more customization opportunities, per Bleacher Report's Brian Mazique:
DimeMag.com's Drew Corrigan highlights My GM's greatest feature:
What truly separates this game mode is the human experience. The heart of this game mode lies in the conversation mode. Every interaction you have in this game in the conversation mode will affect every single thing you do.
Clearly, the next-gen version of NBA 2K14 is going to raise the bar when it comes to sports video games.
Now that that's settled, let the anticipation begin.
