Brandon Thatch showed top-10 potential at UFC Fight Night 32, knocking out Paulo Thiago in the first round. However, Thatch will need a couple more wins before he's considered a legitimate contender in one of the UFC's deepest divisions.
Though Thatch didn't join the top 10, a change was made to the rankings following UFC Fight Night 32. Martin Kampmann jumped two spots, surpassing Jake Shields and Matt Brown.
Several elite welterweights will appear at UFC 167, where Johny Hendricks will try to dethrone Georges St-Pierre. Fringe contenders Josh Koscheck and Tyron Woodley will also try to prove they are worthy of top-10 spots on the main card.
Official UFC Welterweight Rankings
Champion: Georges St-Pierre
- Johny Hendricks
- Carlos Condit
- Rory MacDonald
- Jake Ellenberger
- Demian Maia
- Martin Kampmann (+2)
- Jake Shields (-1)
- Matt Brown (-1)
- Nick Diaz
- Robbie Lawler
Martin Kampmann may have lost two in a row, but he deserves to be ranked above Matt Brown right now. Brown has been on a tear, but he's still looking for a win over a current top-10 welterweight fighter. Kampmann, meanwhile, has only lost to the top two 170-pound contender since stopping top-five welterweight Jake Ellenberger.
Jake Shields is still ranked below Demian Maia. While the judges were split on the decision between Shields and Maia, the American did win that matchup. In a sport where competitors perform only a few times per year, head-to-head results should be immediately reflected in rankings.
