By most accounts, the penalty and ejection on Notre Dame defensive end Stephon Tuitt against Pitt Saturday night was one of the more confusing calls of the 2013 college football season. Tuitt was hit with the controversial “targeting rule” penalty for lowering his helmet into Pitt quarterback Tom Savage – even though Savage himself lowered his own helmet to brace for the impact (not to mention he was far from “defenseless”. The Irish went on to lose to the Panthers, 28-21, effectively ending their hopes at playing in a BCS bowl game.
