The UC Irvine Anteaters were on the verge of pulling off a momentous victory over Fresno State in their men's college basketball season opener on Friday.

Unfortunately, it wasn't to be, as Bulldogs guard Allen Huddleston foiled those plans, sinking a 45-foot half-court shot to beat the buzzer and boost Fresno State to a 98-97 win in overtime.

According to's Rob Dauster, there were five lead changes in the last minute of this game, which is quite the way to kick off the season.

Credit Fresno for hanging tough after trailing at halftime by 10 points.

The two teams made better than 50 percent of their shots from the field in this shootout. Freshman Marvelle Harris led the Bulldogs with a game-high 30 points, while Cezar Guerrero had 23 of his own to headline the five Bulldogs in double figures.

Huddleston came off the bench to pour in 12 for Fresno.

The Anteaters hurt themselves at the free throw line, where they sank just 14 out of 29 shots. A better percentage from the charity stripe would have netted them an almost certain triumph.

It's unfortunate to have blown the game, but this is still an encouraging result from the Big West Conference squad, who nearly found their way into the NCAA Tournament last season, losing in the conference tournament final to Pacific.

Standing up to the Bulldogs proved that UC Irvine isn't going to go quietly. The program just agreed to a five-year extension with head coach Russell Turner.
