The No. 5 Kansas Jayhawks got their 700th win all-time at Phog Allen Fieldhouse, beating the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks in Andrew Wiggins' college debut on Friday night. The much-hyped freshman scored a team-high 16 points in his first game in a KU uniform.
Wiggins led a balanced Kansas offense that ran away from ULM in the second half after a surprisingly close start. The final score was 80-63 in favor of the Jayhawks.
Perry Ellis looked outstanding for Kansas, posting 12 points, eight rebounds and two blocks. Andrew White led the bench effort with 12 points, while Tarik Black (a Memphis transfer also making his Kansas debut) had eight points and another seven boards.
Kansas' other freshmen also showed up, with Wayne Selden dishing out four assists and Joel Embiid grabbing four rebounds (the two combined for 17 points, too). Even Frank Mason, filling in for suspended Tarik Black, had five assists without a turnover, though fouls limited his playing time.
For the Warhawks, Marvin Williams had 19 points and six rebounds before fouling out. Freshman Nick Coppola deserves special mention for scoring 10 points (including 5-for-7 free-throw shooting) while playing his first college game on the road in this atmosphere.
