With an injury to Christian Ponder in the game against the Washington Redskins, Matt Cassel will have to step up for the Minnesota Vikings.  While that certainly makes him an intriguing fantasy option, he's not exactly someone you should consider starting given the team's upcoming games.

Michael Fabiano from reported that Ponder would miss the rest of the game against the Redskins due to a shoulder injury.

If Ponder is forced to miss significant time, that will give Cassel another opportunity to play.  Before Thursday night's game, he'd played in just two other contests, throwing for 489 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions.  In ESPN's standard scoring leagues, he had scored 26 total fantasy points in those two games.

Looking down the road, the potential matchups aren't ideal for Cassel.  The Vikings will be taking on the Seattle Seahawks next week, and they're allowing the second-fewest points to opposing quarterbacks.  They will then take on a few other tough defenses in the Green Bay Packers, Chicago Bears and Baltimore Ravens.

Unless you're seriously desperate for a starting quarterback, it might be best to lay off of Cassel.  The current quarterback situation in Minnesota is incredibly uncertain, and even if Cassel does play, it's unlikely he will be able to be a very productive player.
