David Ortiz Receives Most Write-in Votes in Boston Mayoral Race

After breaking 'The Curse of the Bambino' in 2004 by helping the Boston Red Sox win their first World Series title since 1918, David 'Big Papi' Ortiz ensured he'll never have to buy his own drink in the city of Boston again.

After leading the team to their third championship in a decade last week, plenty of Beantown residents were ready to give him the reigns to the city.

Although he wasn't running for office, the 2013 World Series Most Valuable Player received the most write-in votes in the Boston mayoral election earlier this week, according to WGBHNews.org.  He finished third overall in the running.

There were only 560 write-in votes, but it's unclear how many of those went to Big Papi.  To put that number in perspective, new mayor Martin J. Walsh got 72,514 votes.  Regardless, it is quite the accomplishment for the Dominican ballplayer.

MLB.com's Anthony Castrovince weighed in on the results:

Ortiz hit an incredible .688/.760/1.188 with two home runs, two doubles and six RBI in the World Series. No wonder people in Boston voted for Ortiz.
