Manningham is expected to make his return to the 49ers lineup this week after missing the entire reason while recovering from a torn ACL he suffered late last season. He is expected to assume the No. 2 wide receiver role in the offense and will potentially help open up the passing game for his quarterback and fellow receiver Anquan Boldin.
Boldin has seen double-teams throughout the season so Manningham will likely be targeted early and often to help establish the fact that he will need to be paid close attention to throughout the contest. The Panthers, however, rank third in the league against opposing No.2 receivers, giving up just 28.5 yards to the position, so he is not really a recommended starter his first game out.
