Cristiano Ronaldo might be the most exciting athlete in the world. Physically, he is a specimen to behold—the culmination of size, speed and strength.
The Portuguese forward's work ethic and natural ability have combined to create one of the most fearsome footballers the world has ever known.
On top of his undeniable skill, Ronaldo is quite the showman.
He is eccentric, emotional and completely full of himself. Heck, he just launched an underwear campaign with a 60-foot poster of his half-naked body displayed at Madrid's City Hall.
But for all his accomplishments, Ronaldo is a big baby. Constantly chastised for diving, the Real Madrid man sometimes acts like a spoiled brat when things don't go his way.
The following are five of Ronaldo's greatest on-field tantrums. There were many to choose from.
The stage was set. Young starlet Ronaldo and his compatriots took the field in the European Championship final on home soil.
Their opponent? A mediocre Greece team in the midst of a Cinderella run to the final.
Things did not go according to plan.
Angelos Charisteas' goal midway through the second half was enough to see Greece lift the title, much to the dismay of the young winger.
His tears were broadcast around the world, perhaps a sign of things to come. Though the player has won major trophies with Manchester United and Real Madrid, his national team has failed to make it that deep in a tournament since.
While it isn't a full-fledged freak-out, Ronaldo is not happy about being pulled to the turf in this match against Inter Milan. The video cuts off, but Ronaldo has a moment of madness on the grass before turning his anger into self-pity.
Knowing that the game was a summer friendly makes his reaction even more entertaining.
Fortunately for the striker, he was able to score a well-taken goal later in the game en route to a 3-0 Los Blancos victory.
It might have been four had the referee blown for a spot kick!
Ronaldo looks like he is through on goal before his heels are clipped and he tumbles to the turf. To his dismay, the referee waves play on, unamused by the alleged incident.
It is a bit tough to tell from the angle, but one would wonder why Ronaldo would go to ground when he has ample opportunity to reach the ball and slot home.
Regardless, the striker decides to take his anger out on the grass, slamming it with both his fists. Don't blame the grass, Ronaldo; it was merely a bystander.
Ronaldo can't seem to catch a break.
In many of these clips, there does seem to be at least some contact, but the referee disagrees. In this instance, a young Kieran Gibbs slides in on the Portuguese man, missing the ball but grazing the player.
Ronaldo makes a mess of it, going to ground as we've seen him do a thousand times.
The arm motions, the spin, the look as if he is about to cry—this was a tantrum to behold. The outburst just makes the top five.
When you are known around the globe for diving, you're not going to get much love.
This unfortunate example is from a Champions League match at Ajax. The defender clearly misses the ball, swiping Ronaldo to the ground.
His reaction is quite the spectacle. He pulls at his shorts, berates the linesman and finally looks to the heavens for an answer.
No word yet if he got a response.
The look of disgust is almost too good to be true.
After watching Barcelona go up 1-0 through a Pedro goal, the camera zooms in on Ronaldo's reaction. The player looks like he has just been dumped by his girlfriend.
A deep sadness, a hint of anger—this tantrum has it all.
There is no doubt that Ronaldo hates Barcelona to the very core of his being. They are more than just rivals, they are enemies. The only thing Ronaldo hates more than Barcelona is losing—and the two often go hand in hand.
This tantrum reaches the top three for the sheer contempt on the forward's face.
A recent addition to his portfolio of tantrums, Ronaldo went down in the box against Barcelona in the last Clasico.
A searching ball from Angel Di Maria caught the forward streaking behind the defense. He looks set to smash the ball past a frightened Victor Valdes—before Javier Mascherano clumsily barrels him over.
Perhaps a bit surprisingly, his request for a penalty kick is denied. His reaction—unsurprising.
The look of pure anguish on his face is what jets this up to the No. 2 spot. He has a legitimate penalty claim, but my goodness, pull yourself together, man.
Ronaldo gets up, only to collapse back to his knees, powerless.
Boy would I hate to be Luis Nani after this game.
After completing an astounding move, Ronaldo lifts the ball over Iker Casillas and into the net. It is a goal that will be shown on highlight reels for years to come.
But it won't stand.
Just as the ball is falling into the goal, Nani decides he wants to be certain the ball crosses the line. It does—but the winger is called offside for his touch.
Ronaldo is irate. "Infuriated" doesn't even begin to describe the anger emanating from the forward. He simply cannot fathom how his compatriot has sabotaged one of his most beautiful creations.
After throwing his armband to the ground, Ronaldo screams at his teammate, unable to comprehend the atrocity that just occurred.
He is animated, angry and volatile. This is Ronaldo's greatest on-field tantrum to date, though I'm sure it won't be his last.
