Manchester United missed a glorious opportunity to take charge of Group A after a 0-0 draw with Real Sociedad in San Sebastian.

The visitors were given a great chance to take the lead after the break when Ashley Young was fouled inside the area, but Robin van Persie saw his spot-kick hit the post.

Javier Hernandez also missed a gilt-edged opening after good work from Shinji Kagawa, but blazed his shot over the bar from just a few yards out.

The Red Devils were reduced to ten men in the closing stages when Marouane Fellaini was shown a second yellow card, and in the end the spoils were shared in Northern Spain.

David Moyes' men now need a win in their next game away to Bayer Leverkusen to guarantee their progress to the knockout stages.
