Gates had six catches for 53 yards Sunday in an overtime loss to Washington. He was targeted 10 times and is seeing plenty of looks, but struggling to post numbers to match.
The Chargers' offense is ranked fourth in the NFL with a cool 300 yards per game this season, but the disproportionate totals for players in the offense is skewed against Gates. One of the league's premier field-stretching tight ends, he is seeing the brunt of opposing defensive coverage schemes. A silver lining is that rookie Keenan Allen is excelling in his role as Philip Rivers' go-to guy. Presumably, defenses cannot continue to show Gates such attention and continue to beat San Diego. Patient fantasy owners will likely be rewarded.
