A prospect-laden roster needs to take the next step for Seattle to end its 12-year playoff drought, but the front office can certainly improve the team's chances by adding the right pieces this winter via free agency and trades.

After nearly landing the prize of last year's free-agent market in Josh Hamilton, the Mariners were forced to sign secondary pieces, none of which were good enough to put the team over .500 for the first time since 2009.

It's not a question of whether change is coming to Seattle, it's a question of how significant those changes will be. ESPN's Buster Olney reported that the team's offseason goals are simple: to land a No. 2 starter, a closer, and two front-line power hitters.
