World Football Hero of the Week: Cristiano Ronaldo

Ryan BaileyFeatured ColumnistOctober 30, 2013

This week's hero is Cristiano Ronaldo, the Real Madrid superstar who has shamed FIFA president Sepp Blatter into an apology.

The 77-year-old Swiss executive insulted C-Ron during a speech at the Oxford Union, telling the crowd he preferred Leo Messi and that the Portuguese star "has more expenses for the hairdresser."

Ronaldo was angered by the slight—made by a man who really should show impartiality—and issued a statement on his Facebook page speaking of the lack of respect FIFA has for "me, for my club and my country."

It might have been a bit of a stretch to imply that the hairdresser comment was an example of FIFA's feelings towards the Portuguese culture, but the point was made and Blatter quickly issued an apology via Twitter

For taking a stand against the blunder-prone FIFA boss—and for giving football's governing body another reason not to re-elect him in 2015—Cristiano Ronaldo is our hero of the week.
