The St. Louis Cardinals continued their dominance in defensive awards on Tuesday night when they claimed two Rawlings Gold Glove Awards.

Catcher Yadier Molina and pitcher Adam Wainwright were named recipients of this year's award at their respective positions.  The award marks the sixth straight for Molina and the second of Wainwright's career.

Molina has long been considered the best defender behind the plate in the National League.  He is often looked at as an extension of the coaching staff on the field and has been heralded for his work with the pitching staff for years.

Molina has been named the top overall defender in the league the last two years, becoming the only player in the National League to receive the Rawlings Platinum Glove Award.  It is given to the top defender in each league as voted on by the fans.  Fans are allowed to vote for any of the current year's Gold Glove Award winners at the Rawlings website.

Molina's dominance as a defensive player continues to grow.  His presence as a nominee seemed to make the award a forgone conclusion, at least to fellow nominee A.J. Ellis of the Los Angeles Dodgers

Wainwright claimed his first Gold Glove since 2009, the same year Molina won his second.  They became the second battery mates to win the award twice.  They became the first pitcher-catcher combo to win the award twice with the same team.  Kenny Rogers and Ivan Rodriguez were able to capture the award as teammates twice; however they did it while playing for the Texas Rangers in 2000 and with the Detroit Tigers in 2006.

StlToday.com reported the announcement while also noting the historical significance of the award for the Cardinals:

With 83 Gold Gloves by 21 different players, the Cardinals have won the most defensive honors of any franchise in baseball.

Molina joins Jim Edmonds, Ozzie Smith, Bob Gibson and Curt Flood as Cardinal players to win at least six straight Gold Glove Awards.  Wainwright joins Gibson as the only Cardinal pitchers to win the award more than once.

The Cardinals continue to show dominance in defensive awards every year.  Molina and Wainwright will look to continue that trend throughout the remainder of their careers.
