Today on the MLB channel, there was a show called the Prime Nine, a show that featured what might have been players such as Lyman Bostock, Satchel Paige, Tony Conigliaro, and even Rick Ankiel of the Cardinals.
All of these players had one thing in common: a career altering event. That got me to
thinking: What if one of the players that follow had the same fate?
We've all seen injuries on the baseball field, but this article is a compilation of the strangest baseball injuries that occurred off the field, or before and after a game.
Vince Coleman Gets Rolled In St.Louis
Just before Game 4 of the 1985 NLCS a light rain began to fall. A decision was made to cover the infield with the tarp. Unlike the one pictured above it was a mechanical marvel, push a button listen to the machinery whirrr and wa-la the field is covered and protected from the elements. Coleman who was stretching on the sidelines didn't hear the tarp coming until it was on top of him. It broke a bone in his leg and he missed the entire series and the following Word Series
Wade Boggs Boots One
Lifelong Boston Red Sox fans will need clarification on this one. They are used to seeing Boggsy lay an egg at third. Once, he injured his back while putting on his cowboy boots. The injury cost Boggs seven games.
Doctor K Goes Clubbing
Dwight Gooden once missed a game after getting clubbed by Vince Coleman in the clubhouse (yes I see the irony). Coleman was showing off his new golf club and accidentally hit Gooden on the backswing.
John Smoltz Im-Presses The Judges
John Smoltz once burned himself with an iron, while he tried to press a shirt that he was wearing. Too bad he didn't play third could have had some fun with the hot corner.
Rickey is Really Cool
Rickey Henderson who is never known to be shy once missed time because of a chilling injury. He gave himself frost bite while using an ice pack, he fell asleep.
